Bromyard Bricks
In former times, Bromyard had its own brickworks. In tribute to that, and to signify other aspects of the town, local artist Jane Tudge has created 21st Century bricks to represent the past, present and future of our beautiful town.
See below the inspiration behind the different bricks.
Bromyard Yellow
For the ever-present gorse flowers on Bromyard Downs, which gave the town its name of Bromgeard: old English for a thorny enclosure or an area covered with gorse.
Good Things
For all the produce the brewers, farmers, cider makers, bakers, cooks and all who provide for our table.
Official Measure
Bromyard with its famous backwards D, cast from 17th Century
bushel, to honour the town’s unique heritage, the hand of the original maker
and artisans everywhere.

The Process
The inspiration for the bricks was taken from Richard Deacon Bricks and paviours in Nantes, France.
Rubber moulds and supports were made to pour the resin into. A mould from the Bromyard bushel was also made to cast the embedded lettering. The hops had to be sealed first before being embedded into sticky resin. The case lettering is heavy, so the opposite applies – a layer of resin laid down first and cured before embedding. Finally, a non-slip topcoat was needed.
