Autumn in Bromyard

Get your jumpers out and get ready to fall in love with the cosy season in Bromyard. In case you need some inspiration for things to do in and around Bromyard this autumn, read on.

Harvest time at Brockhampton

Did you know that Brockhampton is the largest orchard cared for by the National Trust? It’s no surprise then that time of year, the estate and manor house are bursting with seasonal produce and products from the gardens. You can pick your own fruit from a variety of trees or grab a jar of homemade jam or chutney.

From the 1st until the 7th of October, Brockhampton celebrates Harvest Week with a life performance from ‘Bygonz’ and a piece of landscape art. The piece is designed by Herefordshire based land and environmental artist Kate Raggett, and visitors are invited to contribute to it in the orchard room.

If you want to explore Brockhampton some more, there are also a number of Woodland Walks marked around the estate.

During half-term, things will get ghostly. Between 22nd and 30th October, children can investigate the ‘Ghosts of the Orchard’ trail for some spooky surprises and a prize.

Brockhampton isn’t the only place near Bromyard where you can have a spooktacular good time. Ralph Court Gardens spares no costs to transform into a ghostly haunt and create a memorable time for old and young alike.

From shy ghosts to singing pumpkins, there will be Halloween characters throughout the gardens to ensure you’re having a scary good time. You can also visit the graveyard or make use of the free coffin measuring service. And if you’re in for a scare, the Haunted Manor will have all skeletons rattling.

For some interactive Halloween fun, be sure to see the Haunted House theatre production of the tales of Mr Giles, the old coach driver. He knows a frightful lot about ghosts, ghouls and strange things that go bump in the night.

Get cosy in a tree house

If you’re looking for a short getaway without the kids, Autumn is the perfect time to get cosy. Wrap yourself up in a soft blanket, grab a cup of tea and just enjoy the view. And where better to get cosy than in a tree house surrounded by colourful autumn leaves?

In Bromyard, we’re lucky to have not one but two glamping sites with beautiful treehouses: the Rookery Woods and Brook House Woods. The latter also has its own Woodland Cinema, for some outdoor big screen magic which is open all through summer until 31st October.

It's apple season!

Herefordshire has a long history of apple growing and cider making, and to show it off the Hereford AppleFest was born. Between 1st and 16th October there will be a variety of apple-themed events all across our beautiful county and of course Bromyard is joining in.

On 2nd October, our monthly Sunday Market at the Square will adopt an apple theme. From a cider bad and free cider tastings to various apple-based product on offer, there definitely won’t be a lack of vitamin C. For little ones there will be an apple bobbing game where they can win toffee apple sweets.

If you want to delve deeper into the science of cider making, you should plan a day out at Little Pomona Orchard & Cidery on 16th October. The independent cidery is having an open day where visitors can come see where their apples grow and how they are made into cider.
